Tiles offer different sizes, patterns and grout lines. Panels create larger uninterrupted areas, with joints and trims depending on the chosen system. Look at full-size samples where possible. A small sample can show colour and texture, but it cannot show how a repeated pattern or a run of joints will appear across the whole wall.

Understand the background preparation

Neither finish should be treated as a way to ignore a damaged or unsuitable wall. Ask what preparation is required, which substrates the manufacturer permits and how wet areas will be detailed. Installation needs to follow the requirements of the actual products selected. A decorative surface alone is not a substitute for a properly specified wet-area system.

Look closely at edges and penetrations

Corners, window reveals, pipe openings and the junction around a bath or shower tray affect both appearance and maintenance. Ask to see the proposed trims and sealant colours alongside the main finish. Agree which walls are included and where the new surface stops. These small details are easier to decide before the materials have been ordered.

Compare care requirements

Tiles introduce grout lines; panels introduce their own joints and edge details. Neither option should be sold as requiring no cleaning or inspection. Check the care instructions for the chosen product, including which cleaners to avoid. Consider how easily you can reach the surfaces behind a screen or around a bath in the finished layout.

Plan for future repairs

Ask what would be involved if a fitting needs access later or a section of surface is damaged. Keeping product names, colour references and relevant spare materials may make future matching easier, although availability can change. Check the product warranty terms directly rather than assuming the finish and installation have identical cover.

Put both choices into a like-for-like quote

Compare the same wall coverage, preparation, corners and finishing details. A material price on its own is not the cost of the installed wall. Share the look you prefer and the maintenance you are comfortable with; then discuss how each option fits the room, your budget and the rest of the bathroom design.
