Before the fitting date is agreed
The layout, specification and responsibilities need to be clear. Confirm product availability and who is checking deliveries for missing or damaged items. A room cannot be finished as planned if a critical fitting arrives late or does not match the agreed dimensions. Ask what needs to be ready before the installer confirms the start arrangements.
Removal and inspection
The first stage may expose the condition of the walls, floor and existing connections. Agree how any unexpected issue will be explained, priced and approved. Allow for the possibility that the programme may need revising if the room needs more preparation than could be seen beforehand. A useful schedule includes communication about changes, not just an optimistic completion date.
Preparation and connections
Work behind the surfaces needs to suit the final layout and products. That can include preparing walls or floors and arranging the required plumbing, ventilation or electrical work. The sequence depends on the chosen system. Materials can have drying or curing requirements; ask how those requirements are included rather than pushing every stage into the shortest possible period.
Surfaces, fittings and finishing
Wall and floor finishes, sanitaryware, screens, storage and accessories need to be coordinated. Some work depends on earlier stages being complete. Confirm when the room will be inspected together, how small outstanding items will be recorded and when the bathroom can be used in accordance with the products fitted. Completion and immediate use are not always the same moment.
If this is your only bathroom
Say so before accepting a programme. Ask which facilities will be available each day, when the water or toilet may be unavailable and what arrangements you will need to make. Do not assume facilities can remain usable throughout the job. If household members have particular needs, explain the practical requirements so they can be considered in the plan.
Get the plan in writing
Record the intended start, sequence, working arrangements, expected interruptions and how updates will be communicated. For flats, include shared-access and delivery considerations. Use the schedule to plan your household, while keeping any dates subject to the scope and conditions actually agreed with the installer.
